Northampton Public Mortuary

LEEC Ltd are proud to have completed a recent project for Public Mortuary in Northamptonshire.

LEEC Ltd are proud to have completed a recent project for the manufacture and installation of a state-of-the-art Public Mortuary in Northamptonshire.

The £9.4m mortuary consolidates services into one area; providing a centralised service for the community. Designed with both operational efficiency and compassion in mind, the facility provides an enhanced environment for families, incorporating specialist viewing and identification rooms to ensure the highest standards of care and dignity.

All equipment was manufactured at our premises in Nottingham prior to installation on site. LEEC installed a comprehensive body storage solution with a capacity of up to 350 deceased individuals. The internal structure consisted of open stainless-steel racking; allowing for an even temperature throughout the cabinet and to preserve bodies at constant temperature between +4ºC to +6ºC and in deep freeze at -20ºC. Fitted with fully adjustable digital controllers for temperature control. A pass-through body storage system was implemented to streamline workflow and minimise manual handling, enabling seamless transfer between zones and into the pathology suite. The Power Stacking Trolleys and tray transfer system are utilised to reduce manual handling and provide full compatibility with LEEC trays, storage cabinets, PM tables as well as all other tray transfer equipment.

The post-mortem suite includes four autopsy tables with integrated tray transfer systems, supported by downdraught dissection benches to ensure a safe, controlled, and hygienic environment for examination and tissue processing. Additional specialist areas include ventilated specimen storage rooms, designed to safely contain and manage samples. These units incorporate air extraction systems to prevent the build-up of hazardous fumes, maintaining a secure and controlled environment. A full range of ancillary equipment—including stainless-steel wash basins, sluices, and wall-mounted storage—was installed with a focus on hygiene, durability, and ease of cleaning.

The LEEC Service contract offers the mortuary a comprehensive maintenance programme that is focused on extending the life of the equipment through regular services and repair maintenance.

This modern mortuary facility brings all services under one roof, simplifying processes and improving coordination across funeral directors, healthcare providers, and associated services. This has provided Northampton Council with an opportunity to improve efficiencies for funeral directors, healthcare and other key services. The LEEC Limited mortuary range has been

specifically designed to improve safety and dignity for the deceased within a mortuary environment.

Testimonial

‘The LEEC equipment will support our new state-of-the-art public mortuary in Northampton, which opened in April 2026, offering a range of modern services including forensic post-mortems, non-invasive CT scanner post-mortems, and paediatric post-mortems as well as bariatric requirements. The facility will alleviate pressure on existing mortuaries, improve the quality of bereavement services, and reduce the need for travel to out-of-county locations for specialised services. The LEEC installation process ran smoothly and to programme with a high level of communication, co-operation and flexibility with all contractors on site.’
