Design, fabrication, supply, delivery and installation of proprietary Mortuary Body Storage and Autopsy System at Fu Shan Public Mortuary, Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Hong Kong

LEEC (working in partnership with Nishimatsu Construction Co. Ltd, Japan), are proud to have finalised and handed over a £1.3 m project, to Fu Shan Public Mortuary, Sha Tin, Tai Wai, Hong Kong.

A highly complex project, both contractually and technically, required close coordination of services and expertise between a UK and Japanese company which culminated in the handover of a state of the art public Mortuary to the Department of Health.

The official contract works commenced on the 17th April 2020, with substantial completion of the installation to all areas on 18th May 2022.

Practical completion took place on the 30th June 2022.

A contract of this nature naturally presented a wide range of challenges, this was exasperated by the added operational,

commercial and logistical issues associated with the impact of COVID-19. In spite of this, equipment was designed, manufactured and shipped to Hong Kong during the midst of Covid-19, with 12x 40ft containers shipped between February 2021 and January 2022.

Due to ever increasing travel restrictions, the project had to be implemented and installed completely by local contractors, with LEEC assisting completely remotely from the UK. Through careful planning and organisation, installation instructions were communicated via video call, messages, emails as unfortunately the Hong Kong Government would not allow UK residents to enter Hong Kong.

This project, the second largest of its nature in Hong Kong for LEEC, presented obstacles which were entirely unforeseen at the start of the project. LEEC's experience, in-house resource and maximising open lines of communication between the internal LEEC team, external suppliers and international partners were crucial in ensuring a successful outcome for Fu Shan Public Mortuary, Hong Kong.

The equipment that LEEC provided were as follows:
  • 8x large Coldrooms with internal Racking and 2x Body Storage Cabinets with internal Racking (Providing a total storage capacity of 830 bodies)

  • 8x Autopsy suites, comprising 31x Ventilated Dissection Benches and combined Autopsy Table Work Stations
