Grossing Stations For Cancer Research

BRIEF
To design, manufacture and install 22 bespoke grossing stations and benches and ventilated specimen storage cabinets for a large, prestigious Cancer Research Laboratory in the Southeast of the UK. The bespoke benches were expertly designed to support technicians in the testing of the tissue samples for clinical trials and undertaking biotechnological research into diseases. The high risk of contamination meant the histology benches provided a safe, controlled and efficient environment for the processing of tissue samples.

THE PROJECT
The LEEC team worked closely with the end user and contractor to understand the exact requirements of the histology units. The department heads and key decision makers met with the LEEC team at the head office to develop solutions suited to the research facility. The grossing stations were tailored to meet the needs for each department and operational requirements for various procedures, from specimen reception to fresh tissue dissection and sample cut up, with processing and staining through to specimen storage and disposal. Once all final designs for the facility were approved the benches were manufactured in house at the LEEC manufacturing site in
Nottingham. All materials were carefully considered and manufactured in Grade 304 and 316 stainless steel to support corrosion resistance and protect the longevity of the units.

The stations featured downdraught ventilation to draw air down through the worktop and reduce toxic vapours away from the user’s workspace. Some of the equipment included formalin dispensing integrated into the grossing station, which was gravity fed from the sites holding tank. Other grossing stations included waste formalin collection which fed into the sites automated disposal system tanks. A low-level alarm was also incorporated to remove any obstruction
during the ventilation process. The dissection area also featured removable, perforated panels with
finger holes to allow for easy removal without additional tools. Other additional items such as shelves, glass panels, lighting canopies, cutting boards with adjustable monitor and keyboard arms were added to the units. The electric height adjustment allows for comfortable use whilst standing or sitting with ergonomic support to accommodate for varying heights. LEEC Limited design, supply and install histology equipment across to prestigious research centres across the UK and overseas. LEEC’s range of workstations are designed to improve well-being, productivity, ergonomics and personal safety during the processing during laboratory testing.
